FEEDBACK

vs. COVERAGE:

A PRIMER

For my purposes, a distinction is drawn to ensure the analysis helps the submitter depending on their needs. A producer may want a deeper analysis, while a writer may want a sense of their script’s viability. Consider your larger goals to determine which type of analysis will help you proceed with the project.

FEEDBACK…

….is geared towards helping the writer explore the nuances of their draft and how to improve it. It may touch on marketing and production, but it is ultimately a literary analysis designed to help you before you head into the next draft.

COVERAGE…

…is geared towards a producer looking to make an informed decision about a script. It is designed to be “first read”. It may touch on literary analysis, but it’s ultimately focused on providing a general sense of the script’s story, marketing, and viability. It includes a rating (Pass, Consider, Recommend), a logline, and a synopsis.

There is also an option for adaptation coverage, which reports on the potential for cinematic adaptation of something that isn’t a screenplay. This includes novels, short stories, plays, or other literary works.

PROOFREADING and EDITING…

…are technical services. They are about ensuring clarity and a professional presentation. It may involve fact-checking or editing for consistency (for instance, ensuring the same name is used for the protagonist throughout), but it does not involve any sort of analysis.
